Benefits of Family Therapy in Colorado Springs

August 07, 2019
Learn how family therapy can achieve different goals in different situations and create harmony and improve relationships and function within the family.

Each of us is greatly influenced by the family we grew in, and what we become in the future is defined by the customs, habits, beliefs, and actions of the family that we have. While we always want a healthy, happy and functional family, this is not always the case.

At times, families can also be dysfunctional and unhealthy. Sometimes this is caused by divorce, a death in the family or a mental disorder of one of the members. And in cases like this, rather than going for individual treatment, seeking professional family mental health services in Colorado is more advisable. Therapy is a great way to improve the condition of the family while helping each member become better.

What is Family Therapy?

Family therapy, also known as family counseling, aims to solve family problems, or individual issues that are affecting the functionality of a family. Oftentimes, it is used in conjunction with other mental health services that are directed to treating an individual for eating disorders, addiction, or other behavioral problems.

It is based on the concept that each family member is interconnected, and individual problems will not be properly addressed without understanding the behavior of the family as a whole.

The following are the most commonly used forms of family therapy:

Bowenian. This form of family therapy is applicable when an individual is unable or does not want to involve other family members during the treatment. It is based on triangulation, which is the natural response to vent out by talking to a third party, and differentiation, which is practicing to become less emotional when reacting in family relationships.

Structural. This is focused on strengthening the relationships within the family by defining the boundaries and making sure that the parents are in control. The therapist observes the family more closely by “joining” them.

Systemic. This is targeted on understanding the meanings of each family members’ behavior and their unconscious communications.

Strategic. In this form of therapy, the therapist usually assigns homework to the family members. This homework aims to improve the way each family member responds to one another by improving their communication and decision-making.
